Unlike "Platinum Soul" which soars without any sentiment, what keeps "Runaway" grounded and relatable to its listeners is that hidden beneath this compendium of stomping electric guitar riffs still lies Electrique's trademark broken heart.
-All Music Guide
Those rare handful of songs which may not match the others in terms of catchiness ("Wonderful" and "In This Diary") are still able to measure up with their sensible and thought-provoking lyrics. "Runaway" feels like a collection of the best of the best. In fact, there may be enough extra material here for another album.
-New Musical Express
Stuffed to bursting with insanely-catchy punk gems, "Runaway" will leave its listeners panting for quiet halfway through yet they will also be panting for more.
-PopMatters
"Runaway" should come with a health warning. Listening to it will induce cramps from excessive foot-tapping if not head-banging and jumping, and, if played on full blast, may cause a heart attack from its sheer loudness.
-Uncut
Showcases the best of this genre. Every track sounds helmed for radio and mass consumption, but it is best not to consume too much too fast though. One song a day will do nicely.
-Pitchfork
Almost too loud to be allowed.
-BBC Music
"Runaway" places its best tracks not near the beginning but in the middle, and the well-planned track arrangement makes inserting Miley Cyrus in between Fall Out Boy and Bowling For Soup work.
-Drowned in Sound
Best for sleepless nights spent studying, "Runaway" bests coffee for perking you up. It just might be a tad too distracting and involving though, especially for the 00's generation which was Electrique's target audience.
-Entertainment Weekly
"Runaway" makes escaping from your problems sound like a mature and a justifiable thing to do, making it a perfect teen anthem for the summer, if only the release date was not delayed that is.
-Rolling Stone
Never had feeling bad felt this good in Electrique's albums.
-Boston Globe
Hard to believe that the feisty romp "Runaway" and the organically sedate "Heart Like A Wheel" were planned by the same individual. Electrique proved with this album that despite going mellow and artistic in its previous effort, it still knows how to keep its listeners hooked. My, weren't the "Heart Like A Wheel" naysayers surprised.
-Dot Music
Exhilirating! A rollercoaster ride of an album. Electrique is clearly at its peak in album-making. All these recent albums make the earlier compilations sound decidedly hamfisted. We cannot wait for more!
-The Guardian
The line "I'm over getting older" in "Weightless" sounds like a reference to the album's predecessor. "Runaway" smashes the somber maturity built up in "Heart Like A Wheel", but I'm positive that the latter album's fans didn't mind.
-The Onion
"Runaway" fills in the gap between the dismal darkness of "Gun" and the shiny glamour of "Platinum Soul". It may be the least edgy among these three rock albums, but it certainly is the most successful.
-The New York Times
The emotional flow of the songs in "Runaway" is simple (exposition, detail, and resolution) but it fails in its overly long conclusion. Any of the last five or six songs could have closed the album perfectly. An understandable flaw since after listening to these last songs, which five would you have removed anyway?
-musicOMH.com
Strictly adhering to a narrow musical genre, the songs in "Runaway" will tend to sound too samey if not for the more experimental tracks like the 80's-inspired "Another Runaway", and the strings in "I Just Wanna Live" and "(Coffee's for Closers)" These three strategically placed tracks keep the album interesting as it lumbers through its heavy 21-track length.
-Spin
What's funny about "Runaway" is that through all that kickass carefree attitude, it remains a good-natured album. Showy and loud like a fireworks display, but somehow, also heartwarming.
-Los Angeles Times
"So Little Time" is the perfect cap to this awesome collection. The lengthy instrumental ending of this song mimics how the whole album tries to keep hold of you. You keep expecting the music to finally fade and end, but it doesn't. Carpe diem. "For tomorrow never comes..." Exactly what "Runaway" is about.
